Stemerman graduated from UCLA with a degree in Philosophy. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1975 and is a member of the California and Nevada state bars.

Stemerman has been a partner in the law firm of Davis, Cowell & Bowe for twenty-five years, specializing in labor and employment matters. He has represented clients before state and federal trial and appellate courts, administrative tribunals in both state and federal jurisdictions as well as hundreds of private arbitrations. Stemerman is counsel to a number of pension funds with assets exceeding $5 Billion.

He was lead counsel in the only class action wrongful termination case ever certified in California. Stemerman has helped mediate settlements in discrimination and wage class action cases in excess of a $100 million. Currently, he is one of the counsel in a gender discrimination class action case against WalMart in which he represents a class exceeding 1.6 million women, the largest employment class ever certified.
